How to Fix a Google Merchant Center Misrepresentation Suspension on Shopify
Suspended for misrepresentation with no detail on why? Google's own rules, the Shopify checklist that covers them, and how to request the review so it has a chance.
A misrepresentation suspension means Google could not confirm who runs your store or what a customer gets for their money. Make your business name, address, phone and email identical on your Shopify contact page, in your footer and in Merchant Center, put your refund policy and terms of service in the footer menu, state total price, shipping and returns plainly, and keep stock status true. Then request a review from Merchant Center or the Shopify Google & YouTube app. Google says reviews usually take 7 business days.
What does "misrepresentation" mean to Google?
Google's Misrepresentation policy says listings must not deceive people by leaving out relevant product information or giving misleading information, and that offers must give people the relevant information before they commit to buy. The policy is about the business and the offer, not about one product photo.
Google splits the violations in two. The egregious ones can lead to a suspension with no warning at all. They include a false identity, business name or contact details, hiding where the business is really located or where products ship from, denying returns the store says it allows, and not showing the total price with all taxes, fees and surcharges. The non-egregious ones, such as listing an unavailable item as in stock, get a warning first. Google's account guidance gives 7 or 28 days before a suspension for most violations.
The practical point is that Google rarely tells you which sentence on your site tripped it. You are expected to audit the whole store against the policy, which is what the checklist below does.
Which parts of the policy do Shopify stores usually trip?
Google's own help page for the related "missing contact information" issue says a suspension or disapproval happens when business details are inconsistent between your website and Merchant Center, or when the website or account is missing a verified phone number, physical address or email address. That is the most common story for a new Shopify store: the theme still shows placeholder text, the footer has no policy links, and the Merchant Center business name differs from the store name.
The second group is pricing and delivery transparency. Google lists hiding a longer order processing time in secondary text, not disclosing shipping costs including return shipping fees, and concealing cross-border fees as examples of dishonest pricing and transaction conditions. A store that adds a customs fee or a handling charge only at the last checkout step is in that territory.
The third group is an offer that cannot be fulfilled: items shown as in stock that are not, or a stated ship-from location that hides the real one. Dropshipping stores hit this often, because the product page implies local delivery while the supplier ships from abroad.
The Shopify checklist to work through before you ask for a review
Go through this in order and fix everything you find in one pass. Each review request that fails makes the next wait longer, so one thorough repair beats several small ones. The requirements below come from Google's Merchant Center Help and from Shopify's Google & YouTube channel requirements page, both read on 28 September 2026.
- Store access: the online store must not be in private mode, meaning no storefront password, and a valid payment provider must be set up in Shopify admin (Shopify's channel requirements).
- Contact information: put at least one of email, phone, mailing address or contact form on a page customers can reach. Google's guidance for Shopify says the information must be visible to customers, and Google's contact page fix says a business address, phone number, email, contact form or social media business profile counts. A real address and a working phone number are the stronger signal.
- Policies in the footer: Shopify says you need a refund policy and terms of service, and that they must be available in your footer menu. In Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Policies, write the text or click Insert template, then add the policy pages to your footer under Content, then Menus. Shopify notes that you are responsible for following the policies you publish.
- Business identity in Merchant Center: under Settings, then Business info, enter a short, professional business name (Google rejects promotional text, excessive punctuation or capitals, and symbols), the address where the business is registered, and a customer service contact with your domain name in the email and a valid business phone number.
- Consistency: the business name, address and phone number must be the same in your website footer, your contact page and Merchant Center. Check spelling, suite numbers and country codes.
- Domain: the store URL must be verified and claimed in Merchant Center, and Shopify says the domain cannot be one already associated with another Merchant Center account. Use the same domain customers see at checkout, not a myshopify.com address you left behind.
- Pricingthe price on the product page, in the cart and at the end of checkout should match. Show taxes, fees and surcharges up front where Google's rule applies, and describe recurring costs if you sell subscriptions.
- Shipping and returns: state shipping costs, processing time, delivery time and the return window in the same words on the product page, in the shipping policy and in the Merchant Center shipping settings. Include who pays return shipping. A mismatch between these three places is a clean example of "concealing" in Google's eyes even when you meant no harm.
- Where you really ship from: say so. If products come from a supplier abroad, the delivery times and the ship-from country need to reflect that.
- Stock accuracy: a product marked in stock in the feed must be buyable. Remove or mark out of stock anything you cannot fulfil.
- Clean-up: Google's contact fix guidance says to remove placeholder content, fix broken links and make sure checkout is secure (HTTPS).
- Product data: every product needs a Google product category and a unique identifier such as a GTIN, or an MPN and brand pair (Shopify's channel requirements). Missing identifiers are a separate disapproval, but they make the account look unfinished.
Do reviews and trust signals help with a misrepresentation review?
Google's Misrepresentation page does not list customer reviews, a Trustpilot profile or a Google Business Profile as requirements, so do not treat them as a fix. What it asks for is verifiable identity and honest terms. Where trust signals help is indirect: a store with an About page that names a real person and address, real reviews on product pages and clear policies reads as a working business to whoever looks at it, and that is the impression the review is trying to confirm.
See how to build customer trust on Shopify for the on-page side. If you want to see what a crawler receives from one of your product pages, including whether review text and Organization markup are in the delivered HTML, the free AI readiness checker at /tools/ai-readiness-checker fetches it the way a crawler does and needs no account. It does not check Merchant Center, so it is a look at your page, not a policy test.
How do I request the review?
Fix first, then ask. Google's guidance says that if the violating items are removed during a warning period you do not need to request an account review, so a warning can sometimes end quietly. For a suspension, Google gives two routes, and both need the fixes to be live on your store first.
From the Shopify side, open the Google & YouTube app, go to the Settings tab and choose Request re-review. From Merchant Center directly, use the banner on the Home page or the Diagnostics tab. If Google offers an appeal form, explain what you changed and why the store is compliant. Google's policy page says reinstatement happens in compelling circumstances only, so be thorough, accurate and honest, and attach documentation if it asks for any.
- Change the site and the Merchant Center settings first, and load the pages yourself to confirm the changes are live.
- Wait for Google to recrawl. Google's contact page fix says the crawls usually finish within 24 to 48 hours after you publish technical fixes.
- Request the review once. In the message, list what you changed in plain terms: contact page, policies, matching business details, pricing statement.
How long does a review take?
Google's Misrepresentation page says account reviews typically take 7 business days, and may take longer for complex ones. Another Google page for the Shopify app gives a range of up to 3 to 7 business days. Plan for a week and avoid piling on new requests during it.
If the review succeeds, Google says the issue disappears from Merchant Center.
What if the review is rejected again?
Google warns that after failed re-reviews the review button is disabled and the account stays suspended for an escalating cool-down. Treat a rejection as information: something on the site still does not match the policy, and Google will not say which part.
Use the cool-down to redo the audit from the top of the checklist with a fresh pair of eyes. Read your site as a stranger would, from a product page to the checkout, and ask three questions. Can I tell who runs this and where they are? Can I see the full price, delivery time and return terms before paying? Is anything on the page a promise the store cannot keep? The typical missed item is a mismatch between two places, such as a return window of 30 days in the policy and 14 days in the shipping settings.
If you did all that and the store is genuine, use the standard appeal, which Google says may require documentation, and explain what you changed. Google states that accounts are only reinstated in compelling circumstances, so be thorough, accurate and honest. Serious violations such as a false identity or hidden business location can be suspended without warning, and Google publishes no further path for those. If that describes the store, a page edit will not fix it.
How do I stop it coming back?
Treat Merchant Center as a live mirror of your store. Whenever you change shipping rates, return terms, your address or your business name, change all three places on the same day: the store, the policy pages and Merchant Center. Re-check stock sync after a supplier change, and keep any theme update from restoring placeholder text.
Once the account is healthy, see Google seller ratings explained for how star ratings reach Google. Indexing is a separate matter from Merchant Center, so if your organic pages also need attention, start with how to get your Shopify store on Google and the Shopify store audit checklist.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Google Merchant Center misrepresentation review take?
Google says account reviews typically take 7 business days and may take longer for complex ones. Fix the store, allow a day or two for Google to recrawl, then request the review once and wait.
Why does Google not tell me what is wrong?
The policy is judged on the whole business and store, so the notice is general. Google's own fix guidance points at the same set of causes each time: inconsistent business details, missing contact information, missing policies, hidden costs and placeholder content. Audit for those.
What contact details does Merchant Center accept?
Google's help says to display at least a business address, phone number, email, contact form or social media business profile on your online store. The business address and a valid phone number in Merchant Center settings should match what the store shows.
Do I need a refund policy on my Shopify store?
Yes, for the Google & YouTube channel. Shopify's requirements say you need a refund policy and terms of service, and that they must be available in your footer menu. Create them under Settings, then Policies.
Can I request another review straight away if the first fails?
Not reliably. Google says the review button is disabled after failed re-reviews and the account stays suspended for a cool-down. Use that time to find the mismatch you missed.
