How to Get Your Shopify Products Into ChatGPT Shopping (2026)
What changed between OpenAI’s Instant Checkout launch and today, what a Shopify store needs to appear in ChatGPT, where the setting lives in your admin, and what decides whether ChatGPT actually recommends your product once it can see it.
On Shopify there is nothing to install. Eligible stores are shared with ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog by default, managed under Sales channels > Agentic in your admin, and shoppers who choose your product check out on your own store in ChatGPT’s in-app browser. You need to sell to US customers, have terms, privacy and refund policies in place, and have products that meet Catalog’s rules. Being visible is the easy part. Whether ChatGPT recommends you depends on your product data and on what customers say about the product, as a rating in Shopify Catalog and as review text on pages it can read.
The timeline: from Instant Checkout to checkout on your own store
Many articles on this topic date from autumn 2025 and describe a system that has since changed. Here is what happened, in order, from OpenAI’s, Shopify’s and Google’s own announcements.
On 29 September 2025 OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, letting US ChatGPT users buy single items from US Etsy sellers inside the chat, with over a million Shopify merchants described as "coming soon". It ran on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard OpenAI built with Stripe. Merchants were to pay a small fee on completed purchases.
On 10 December 2025 Shopify launched Agentic Storefronts: one admin setting that makes a store’s products discoverable across AI chat platforms, with orders flowing back into Shopify.
On 11 January 2026 Google and Shopify announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a second open standard for how AI agents discover products and complete checkout, co-developed with retailers including Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. Shopify also opened its Catalog to brands not on Shopify through a new Agentic plan.
On 24 March 2026 OpenAI changed course. In its own words, the initial version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide", so it is letting merchants use their own checkout and concentrating on product discovery. It widened ACP to cover discovery feeds and said Shopify product data already reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no work needed from individual merchants.
In June 2026 Shopify’s Edition announcement turned Agentic Storefronts into a single control screen in the admin with per-channel reporting, and confirmed that Catalog and UCP are on by default for Shopify merchants. UCP itself keeps moving; its latest protocol release is dated 25 August 2026.
- 29 Sep 2025: OpenAI Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol.
- 10 Dec 2025: Shopify Agentic Storefronts.
- 11 Jan 2026: Universal Commerce Protocol (Google and Shopify); Shopify Agentic plan.
- 24 Mar 2026: OpenAI moves to merchant checkout and product discovery.
- Jun 2026: Agentic Storefronts becomes one admin screen with per-channel results.
How does ChatGPT checkout work for a Shopify store today?
For ChatGPT, the purchase happens on your store. Shopify’s help centre says customers complete their purchase in a ChatGPT in-app browser, or in a new tab on ChatGPT on the web, using your normal checkout, with its branding, customisations and payment methods. OpenAI’s help centre says the same from its side: Shopify stores may appear when relevant, and users check out on the merchant’s online store.
Shopify states there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond your usual payment processing. Orders arrive in your admin like any other, and the Agentic screen reports them by channel.
ChatGPT is not the only channel on that screen. Shopify’s current list is ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and the Gemini app, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta, plus Shopify’s own Shop app. On the Google, Microsoft and Meta channels, Shopify says customers can complete the purchase inside the channel through a Shopify-powered direct checkout, if you have direct checkout switched on. ChatGPT is the one that sends the buyer to you.
What does a Shopify store need to appear in ChatGPT?
Two sets of rules apply: the ChatGPT channel’s, and Shopify Catalog’s, since Catalog is how your products get there. Both come from Shopify’s help centre as it reads today.
For the ChatGPT channel, your store must sell to customers in the United States, though it can be based anywhere. You must accept the Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms and have a terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy in place. Legal disclosures on a product have to sit within the first 6,000 characters of its description. Products sold only to B2B customers are left out, as is anything that breaks OpenAI’s commerce policies (OpenAI’s own list covers adult content, age-restricted goods such as alcohol and nicotine, weapons, prescription medicines and similar).
For Shopify Catalog, the store has to be on the Starter plan or above and not in private mode, and in good standing (Shopify looks at things like verified identity, real sales history, prompt fulfilment and low chargebacks). Each product needs a title, at least one image, a price above zero, and a product URL, and must be published to the online store (or a Hydrogen or headless storefront). Unlisted products, products hidden from search engines, free products and mature content are excluded.
- Sells to US customers (the store itself can be anywhere).
- Terms of service, privacy policy and refund policy published.
- Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms accepted.
- Starter plan or above, store not in private mode, account in good standing.
- Each product: title, image, price above zero, published, not unlisted or hidden from search.
- Legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of the description.
Step by step: turning ChatGPT on and checking it works
Because the channel is on by default for eligible stores, for many merchants this is a check rather than a setup. Work through it in this order.
- In your Shopify admin, open Sales channels > Agentic. You need to be the store owner, or a staff member with permission to view products and manage the Agentic sales channel.
- Look at "Allow Shopify to manage for me". When it is on, Shopify gives every agentic channel Catalog access, switches on direct checkout where a channel supports it, and enrols you in new channels as they arrive.
- If you want control per channel, switch that setting off, select ChatGPT, and make sure Shopify Catalog access is on. Accept the supplemental terms if you are asked.
- Publish or complete your terms of service, privacy policy and refund policy if any are missing.
- Use the search preview tool on the Agentic screen. Type the searches a buyer would use and see where your products come back, then read the listing quality bars for each one.
- Check your robots.txt still allows OAI-SearchBot, the crawler OpenAI uses for ChatGPT search. Shopify’s default file does not block it; a custom robots.txt.liquid might.
- Watch the Agentic screen for sessions, orders and conversion by channel, and compare ChatGPT with Google AI Mode and Copilot over a few weeks.
What decides whether ChatGPT recommends your product?
Being in Shopify Catalog makes a product eligible. It does not make it the answer. OpenAI’s help centre says that when choosing products to show, ChatGPT looks at the shopper’s request and context, at structured metadata such as price and description, and at other third-party content, and gives the example of weighing available options, price and reviews. Where several merchants sell the same item, it ranks them on availability, price, quality and whether the merchant is the maker or primary seller.
Two things are within your reach: the product data, and what customers say about the product.
Product data is the part Shopify measures for you. The Agentic screen’s listing quality indicators score five things: description completeness (the length of the description), image coverage, product reviews, variant and option completeness, and shop policy completeness. Shopify also advises clear titles, detailed specifications, materials, sizing and care information, and accurate barcodes such as GTINs, and it offers catalog mapping if your best product information lives in metafields.
What customers say travels by two routes, and it helps to see them separately.
The first route is Shopify Catalog. Shopify’s product reviews indicator "measures your average product rating and review count", and Shopify describes reviews as signalling "trust and popularity". OpenAI’s own feed format for direct partners carries the same two numbers, a review count and a star rating, and OpenAI’s documentation lists reviews among the attributes that improve ranking. Shopify defines standard product metafields for these numbers, reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count, and asks review apps to write them. Shopify does not publish exactly which field its indicator reads, so it is reasonable to ask your review app whether it writes them.
The second route is the web, and this is where the words live. OpenAI’s feed format is explicit that raw review text is not part of the feed. Yet ChatGPT shows review summaries of customer likes and dislikes, and OpenAI says those summaries are based on reviews from public websites. For your store, that means the review text on your product pages, read by OpenAI’s crawler.
Which brings in the detail most stores miss. Vercel and MERJ studied AI crawler traffic in December 2024 and found that none of the major AI crawlers, OpenAI’s included, runs JavaScript. They read the HTML as it arrives. Many review apps draw reviews into the page with JavaScript after it loads, so a shopper sees the reviews and ChatGPT sees none. The star rating may reach ChatGPT through Catalog while the sentences that explain it never do.
Where BeyondReviews fits, and where it does not
To be clear about the boundary first: getting your products into ChatGPT is Shopify’s job, done through Catalog and Agentic Storefronts. BeyondReviews does not plug into either, and you do not need it to be listed.
What BeyondReviews does is the second route. Your reviews, your replies to them, and the customer phrases you approve are printed into the product page’s own HTML, so a crawler that reads the page as it arrives reads them too. The reply desk drafts an answer to every review in your store’s voice, which adds more plain text about the product in words customers actually used, and nothing publishes until you approve it. Product and Review schema are on every plan.
The free plan covers up to 100 orders a month with unlimited review requests, photo and video reviews, Google stars and 10 AI replies a month, so a store starting in ChatGPT can start collecting the reviews that feed both routes without paying. If you are moving from another review app, your existing reviews are imported as part of setup and count toward your rating from day one.
To see what an AI crawler gets from one of your product pages today, run it through our free AI Readiness Checker, which fetches the page without running JavaScript and tells you whether the review text came back.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a ChatGPT Shopify integration I need to install?
No. Shopify shares eligible products with ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog by default, and you manage it under Sales channels > Agentic in your admin. There is no separate app. Stores that are not on Shopify can apply to OpenAI for a direct product feed, which OpenAI currently offers to approved partners.
Can customers check out inside ChatGPT from my Shopify store?
Not in the sense of the old Instant Checkout. In March 2026 OpenAI moved to letting merchants use their own checkout, and for Shopify stores the buyer completes the purchase on your store in ChatGPT’s in-app browser, or in a new tab on the web. Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Meta can offer a Shopify-powered checkout inside the channel if you switch direct checkout on.
Does selling on ChatGPT cost anything?
Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT; you pay only your standard payment processing. The fee OpenAI described for Instant Checkout in September 2025 applied to purchases completed inside ChatGPT, which is not how Shopify orders from ChatGPT are completed today.
Can I sell on ChatGPT if my store is outside the US?
Yes, if you sell to US customers. Shopify’s requirement is that the store sells to customers in the United States; the store itself can be based anywhere.
Why is ChatGPT not recommending my products even though they are eligible?
Eligibility only puts a product in the pool. ChatGPT weighs the request against price, availability, product data and what customers say, including review summaries drawn from public websites. Check the listing quality bars on the Agentic screen, fill gaps in descriptions and images, and make sure your review text is in the page HTML, since AI crawlers do not run JavaScript.
How do I remove my products from ChatGPT?
Go to Sales channels > Agentic, switch off "Allow Shopify to manage for me", select ChatGPT and switch off Shopify Catalog access. Shopify says it can take up to seven days for your product data to stop being shared, and your pages can still be found through ordinary web crawling.
