Shopify Reviews Not Showing: 11 Causes and How to Fix Each One
When reviews vanish from a Shopify product page, the cause is almost always one of eleven things, and most of them take a minute to check. Work through them in order, starting with the two that account for most cases: the app embed and the app block.
Open your live theme in the theme editor and check two things first: that your review app’s app embed is switched on, and that the app’s reviews block has been added to the product template your product actually uses. If both are in place, check whether the reviews are published in the app, whether you edited a copy of the theme rather than the live one, and whether a page builder needs the app’s own element. Stars missing from Google search results are a separate problem with separate causes.
Start with a two-minute check
Before changing anything, find out what the shopper actually sees. Open the product page in a private browser window, logged out of your admin, and look for three things: the star rating near the title, the reviews section lower down, and any empty space where either should be. An empty gap usually means the block is placed but nothing is loading into it. No gap at all usually means the block was never added to this template.
Then open the theme editor from Online Store, Themes, and check which theme carries the Live label. Plenty of “my reviews disappeared” reports end here: the fix was made on a duplicate or a draft theme, and the live store never received it.
- Test in a private window, logged out, on the live domain.
- Note whether you see an empty gap or nothing at all.
- Confirm you are editing the theme marked Live, not a copy.
- Pick one product that you know has published reviews and test on that.
1. The app embed is switched off
Most review apps on Online Store 2.0 themes load through an app embed: a switch in the theme editor that adds the app’s code to every page. If it is off, the reviews block can sit in the right place and still render nothing, because the code that fills it never loads. In the theme editor, click the App embeds icon in the sidebar, find your review app, turn it on and save.
Okendo puts it plainly in its own install guide: if the Okendo Reviews app embed is not enabled, the widget will not appear. Loox calls its embed the Loox Core Script and Judge.me calls its embed Judge.me. App embeds belong to a theme, so a new or duplicated theme may need the switch turned on again.
2. The reviews block was never added to the product template
Installing a review app does not place its reviews section on your product page. On Online Store 2.0 themes the app registers app blocks, and you add them yourself: open the product template in the theme editor, click Add section (or Add block inside a section), open the Apps tab, choose the app’s reviews block, drag it where you want it and save. Shopify’s own help notes that the search in that picker covers only your installed apps, and that a section which does not support app blocks will not show an Apps option at all.
The star rating is usually a separate block from the reviews list. A store can have one without the other, so check both: stars under the product title, the full reviews block lower down the page.
- Reviews list: added as a section or block on the product template.
- Star rating: usually a block inside the product information section.
- No Apps tab in the picker: that section does not support app blocks, so try another section or add a new one.
3. The product uses a different template
Themes can hold several product templates, and each product is assigned one in its admin page through the Theme template field. If you added the reviews block to Default product but this product is assigned to, say, a landing template, the block is simply not on the page it renders. Open the product in your admin, check the Theme template field, then add the reviews block to that template in the theme editor.
Shopify notes that the template options you can assign come from your current live theme only. A template that exists on a draft theme will not appear in the list until that theme is published.
4. You changed, duplicated or updated the theme
Switching themes is a common way for reviews to disappear overnight. App blocks and app embeds are saved as part of a theme’s own settings, so a freshly installed theme starts without them, and so can a theme updated to a new version by installing it fresh. The review app’s data is untouched. Only the placement has to be done again.
The vendors say the same thing in their help centres. Loox says that if you change your live theme you must activate the Loox Core Script again. Stamped says its review widgets have to be reinstalled after a theme change or update. Judge.me suggests opening your previous theme in the editor first, noting every Judge.me block it carried, and then adding each one to the new theme.
5. You are on a vintage theme without app blocks
Older themes built before Online Store 2.0 do not support app blocks in most sections, so there is nothing to drag into place and the Apps tab never appears. On these themes the review app’s snippet has to be pasted into the theme code, usually in the product template or a product section file. Judge.me says that if you cannot see its Review Widget block in the Apps tab, you are on a vintage theme and need the manual code install. Loox and Okendo publish separate code instructions for vintage themes too.
If you have already pasted code and still see nothing, check that it sits inside the product template where the product object exists. Code placed outside that scope has no product to load reviews for.
6. A page builder replaced the product page
GemPages, PageFly, Shogun and Replo pages do not include your theme’s app blocks. They need the review app’s own element, added inside the builder and placed inside a product element so it knows which product to load. The details differ by builder, and each documents them.
GemPages says it only displays reviews that already exist in the app, and that its Loox element must sit inside a Product module. PageFly asks you to enable the app under Add third-party elements. Shogun asks you to switch on the integration under Settings, Integrations. Replo asks for the review component to sit inside its Shopify Product component, and for Loox it notes that only one Loox review component can appear on a page at a time.
- Add the review app’s element from inside the builder, not the theme editor.
- Place it inside the builder’s product element.
- Republish the builder page after adding it.
- Check the builder is on the page you are testing, not a theme template.
7. The reviews exist but are not published
A review that is waiting for moderation, hidden, or marked as spam will not display, and a product with no published reviews may show nothing at all. Several apps hide the star rating on products with zero reviews by default. Loox, for example, hides its star rating on products without reviews unless you turn on its option to show empty stars.
Check the review’s status in the app. Loox holds reviews under your auto-publish setting as Pending and, under its own policy, publishes any pending review automatically 14 days after submission unless it has been rejected for a valid reason. Judge.me notes that if its Write a review button is set to No one, the widget can stay hidden on products that have no reviews yet. Widget filters matter too: Stamped says its display widgets show only 5-star reviews by default unless you change the minimum rating.
8. It is too soon, or a cache is serving an old copy
A review published a moment ago may not appear straight away. Yotpo’s troubleshooting guide says new reviews can take up to 4 hours to show in its widget. Most other apps do not publish a figure, so give a new review a few hours before treating it as missing.
Caching and script tools can also get in the way. Yotpo names Cloudflare’s Rocket Loader as something that can disrupt its widget. If you run a CDN, a speed app that delays or defers scripts, or a cookie banner that blocks scripts until consent, test with each switched off in turn. A widget that appears the moment one of them is paused has told you the cause.
9. A market, a translation or an extra domain
Shopify lets you customise a theme per market. Its help centre explains that sections added to the store default do not automatically appear in a market that has its own custom section order, so a reviews block added after a market was customised can be missing for shoppers in that market only. Open the theme editor with that market selected and add the block there too.
Some apps also check which domain is asking for reviews. Loox asks you to list external domains in its settings under Settings, General, External domains, and Shogun’s Loox guide tells Markets users to add every domain where reviews should display. If reviews show on your main domain but not on a country domain, this is the first place to look.
10. Your theme still points at the old Shopify Product Reviews app
Shopify’s own free Product Reviews app was switched off on 6 May 2024, and the reviews it held stopped displaying. Themes from that era often still carry its code: a div with the id shopify-product-reviews that printed product.metafields.spr.reviews. On a store that never replaced the app, that code now outputs nothing, which looks exactly like a broken widget.
Search your theme code for spr and shopify-product-reviews, remove what you find once you have a replacement app in place, and install the new app’s block. Our guide to the discontinued app covers what happened, how to recover old reviews, and what to use instead.
11. Stars are missing on collection pages
Product cards on collection pages are a different template from the product page, and most themes need to be told where to get the rating. Newer Shopify themes read the standard reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count metafields, which review apps keep up to date, and some let you pick your review app in the theme settings. Loox names Horizon and Vessel as themes where you can define Loox as your review app and let the theme draw the stars. Older themes need the app’s rating snippet pasted into the product card file.
Stars missing in Google is a separate problem
Reviews that show on your page but not as stars in Google search results are not a display fault. Google reads the review markup in your page on each crawl and decides whether to show stars. Stars can drop out when the markup breaks, when two apps print competing ratings for the same product, after a theme or app switch, or when Google changes what it shows for a type of query. Seller ratings, the stars on Google Ads, run on a different system again, with their own thresholds.
We cover both in separate guides: why star ratings vanish from search, and why Google seller ratings are not showing. Fix the on-page display first, because if the reviews are not in the page, no markup fix will bring the stars back.
What each app’s own help centre says
These notes come from each vendor’s help documentation, read on 24 September 2026. Every one of these apps is a dependable way to collect and display reviews, and each documents its setup clearly. If none of the causes above fits, their support teams can see your store’s setup from their side.
- Judge.me: enable the Judge.me app embed, then add the Review Widget block from the Apps tab on the Default product template. No block in the Apps tab means a vintage theme and a manual install. After a theme change, note the blocks on the old theme and add them to the new one.
- Loox: toggle on the Loox Core Script under App embeds, then add the Reviews Widget and Star Rating Widget blocks. After changing your live theme, go to Preferences, General, Add Loox to your theme, and select the new theme.
- Yotpo: check the widget is installed for your platform, that the store is linked to the right Yotpo account, and that the review is published in Moderation. New reviews can take up to 4 hours to appear.
- Okendo: the Okendo Reviews app embed must be on, or no widget appears. If widgets still do not show, check that Review Widgets is on under Reviews, Settings, Widgets.
- Stamped: widgets are not placed automatically on install, and must be reinstalled after a theme change or update. Stamped notes that on Online Store 2.0 its app block is placement only and does not load its script, which has to be present in the theme.
Why this keeps happening, and the other way to do it
Nearly every cause above comes from the same design. The review app stores your reviews on its own servers, and a script running in the shopper’s browser fetches them after the page loads and paints them into a placeholder. That works well when every link in the chain holds. When the embed is off, the block is missing, a builder hides the placeholder or a script blocker stops the request, the reviews are still there and the shopper sees nothing.
BeyondReviews takes a different route. Your reviews and replies are written into the product page’s own HTML, so they arrive with the page instead of depending on a script loading afterwards. That also means Google and AI answer engines can read them, since none of the major AI crawlers runs JavaScript. If you decide to switch, importing your existing reviews is part of setup, they count toward your rating from day one, and keeping your Google stars through the move is treated as our problem, not yours. It is free up to 100 orders a month, with photo and video reviews and Google stars included.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my Shopify reviews not showing on the product page?
Usually because the review app’s app embed is off, or its reviews block was never added to the product template the product uses. Check both in the theme editor on your live theme. If they are in place, check the product’s Theme template field, the review’s status in the app, and whether a page builder needs the app’s own element.
My reviews disappeared after I changed theme. Are they gone?
No. The reviews are stored by your review app, not in the theme. A new theme starts without the app’s embed and blocks, so turn the app embed on again and add the reviews and star blocks to the product template. Loox, Judge.me and Stamped all document this step for theme changes.
Why do reviews show in the theme editor but not on the live store?
Most often because the theme you edited is not the live one, or the live store is serving a cached or script-blocked copy. Confirm the theme is marked Live, test in a private window, and try again with any script-deferring speed app, CDN setting or consent banner paused.
Why are the stars missing on my collection pages?
Product cards use a different template from the product page. Newer Shopify themes can draw stars from the standard reviews.rating metafields that review apps update, sometimes after you select your review app in the theme settings. Older themes need the app’s rating snippet added to the product card code.
Can I still use the Shopify Product Reviews app?
No. Shopify switched it off on 6 May 2024 and its reviews no longer display. If your theme still contains its code, remove it and install a replacement. BeyondReviews is free up to 100 orders a month and imports your old reviews as part of setup.
